Pulpy Shilpy

With roots in soul, jazz and wordplay, poetess and producer Pulpy Shilpy is known for her unique and versatile methods of storytelling and performance

Pulpy Shilpy is the electronic avatar of Pune-based singer/songwriter Gowri Jayakumar, who also fronted freak funk quartet Run Pussy Run. With her roots in soul, jazz and wordplay, she is known for her unique and versatile methods of storytelling and performance. Gowri was a journalist for seven years (2006-2012) after which she studied music for ten months at Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music. She began playing guitar at the age of 15, and that’s how it all began.

The poetess and producer released her debut hip-hop single ‘Kaadal Mannan’ – a plea to break away from the medieval marital habits of her ancestors – last year to rave reviews, with Rolling Stone India describing the song as her “feminist fiercest”. A year after, the feisty songstress dropped her gritty electro EP ‘SLOUGH’, establishing herself as a versatile, malleable artist with the dynamic nature of the release, which is an amalgamation of glitch, hip-hop, synthwave, nu-disco, breakbeat and electronic. Wild City dubbed it: “A wonderful sonic experiment that provokes a mind-bending, cathartic journey woven by glitchy sounds, 8-bit effects, and provocative wordplay and storytelling.” Pulpy Shilpy is currently working on her sophomore EP, which she hopes to release this year.

Early in 2019, Pulpy Shilpy also launched Orbs Cure Labs, a record label and collective focused on pushing fearless experimentation, exploration and expression in the South Asian urban sonic realm, with a commitment to empowering left-field, gender-positive, genre-bending projects, artists and cultural spaces. With an immediate focus on bringing together the underground female music producers and composers of South Asia, OCL intends to spread its seed through mixtapes, compilations, collaborations, showcases and concerts.
