Abhi Meer is an electronic music composer, touring DJ and radio presenter currently residing in Mumbai, India. When not buried behind a mountain of patch cables, he plumbs the depths of music through his long, angular sets and regular radio shows. A former music critic, Abhi Meer likens DJing to storytelling – a ruse for exploring fantasy worlds clubbed in with rationale for critical research. As a composer and synthesist, he is currently working on his third long-form experimental music composition, ‘Atlantis Reborn’, scheduled to debut as an octophonic stage show in 2020 fusing modern Buchla format synthesizer modules with vintage organs.
Abhi Meer will be debuting his live show SPEKTRA at Magnetic Fields, a live performance of neo-classical spectral music on the modular synthesiser.
Unique to its environment, SPEKTRA will use for its point of departure the ravanahatha or ‘demon’s fiddle’ – an ancient string instrument from 7th-10th century Rajasthan. Composed and written by Abhi Meer for synthesiser and orchestra, SPEKTRA will employ microtonality, cellular automata rules, and synthesis techniques such as Karplus-Strong and granularity to reanimate the sound of the ancient fiddle for the modern era. Its intended purge is a 50-minute suite of cinematic, electronic sound that is equal parts optimistic and lachrymose.
